The New North: Supporting Community-Led Strategies for a Strong, Sustainable, and Connected Ashland County in Changing Times

Since early 2025, the CommNS has been collaborating with UW-Extension Ashland County on a project titled The New North: Integrating Newcomers and Communities In Northern Wisconsin for Civic Health and Sustainable Rural Futures. Funded by an Extension Innovation Grant, this project aims to explore the experiences of a growing number of new residents in Ashland County and opportunities to both welcome these newcomers and promote greater connection for the whole community.  The project also provided an opportunity for meaningful community engagement and advisment about fundamental questions faced by the region in a time of population, economic, and other shifts.

As part of this work, during the summer of 2025 we conducted an online survey of new residents about their experiences and interests of community engagement. In September, the CommNS team traveled to Ashland to talk to local businesses, organizations, and community members about their current experiences and efforts, and ideas for the future to contribute to a connected, strong region. Through these efforts, we gained important insights about Ashland County residents’ experiences and hopes for their communities and the region.

We are happy to share the Summary Report that includes what we heard from residents and the recommendations that arose from these conversations. We hope this work can inform local efforts, leaders, and community members to create meaningful connections and engagement across Ashland county, and shape a strong future.  We hope this project might also offer helpful information and ideas to other communities facing similar issues and opportunities.
